Nigeria faces a significant shortfall in fertiliser application despite having production capacity. National consumption is about 18.6kg per hectare, far below the 50kg/ha benchmark of the 2006 Abuja Declaration. Data from various sources show a decline in application rates from 22.6kg/ha in 2020 to 4.2kg/ha in 2023. This low usage hampers agricultural productivity and food security.
