The Benue State House of Assembly has passed a bill that provides free treatment for snakebite victims in government hospitals across the state. The bill was passed on Friday during plenary after its third reading, with the sitting presided over by Speaker Berger Alfred Emberga. The passage followed a public hearing where health sector stakeholders emphasized the need to make snakebite treatment accessible, particularly for farmers and rural dwellers. Dr Matthew Damkor, Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Health and Human Services, noted that snakebite remains a serious but often neglected public health challenge in rural communities, and the law aims to remove financial barriers to prompt medical attention.
