The Africa CDC has linked the spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo to delayed detection and insecurity. Mr Boum noted that the outbreak involves the Bundibugyo virus, a less commonly detected Ebola species, unlike the Zaire strain that has been associated with most Ebola outbreaks in the DRC. The situation is compounded by ongoing insecurity in affected areas.
