Jason Kelly, co-founder and CEO of Ginkgo Bioworks, has been planning a science competition pitting a top scientist against OpenAI's latest models in designing proteins using cell-free protein synthesis. Michael Jewett, a Stanford University professor and expert in the technique, agreed to compete against OpenAI's team of AI agents. Jewett would be allowed to use any commercially available AI model, while OpenAI would use its most advanced, unreleased AI. The contest was to be held in Ginkgo's 15,000-square-foot robot-filled lab in Boston, with Ginkgo executives serving as judges for three rounds.
