The Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, has stated that democracy is not a foreign concept to Africa, as indigenous communities practised democratic principles long before the introduction of ballot papers and electoral commissions. He made this remark while chairing the All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) in Enugu. Achebe argued that traditional systems of governance in Africa required the consent and participation of the people, reflecting fundamental democratic values. He emphasised that democracy should not be regarded as a foreign political idea handed down to Africans.
