Hajiya Zara Mai Tuwo, an octogenarian in Kano, has been selling tuwo and dumame for over 50 years. She wakes up early to grind millet and prepare pots of tuwo for customers at Lungun Filasku, Fagge area. Known for her millet tuwo served with kuka soup or okra, often with cow butter and meat, she also popularized dumame, a leftover tuwo reheated in soup for morning consumption. Hajiya Zara started her trading journey with fura before switching to tuwo when her children were young, and the business has sustained her family for generations.
