Parliamentarians from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have warned that West Africa faces a climate-driven crisis, with shrinking water resources, degraded farmland, and changing weather patterns fueling competition for land. The warning was made at the Second 2026 Parliamentary Seminar in Accra, Ghana, where lawmakers examined the intersection of climate change, environmental degradation, livelihoods, migration, and regional security. The discussions marked a shift from treating climate change as solely an environmental issue to recognizing it as a governance, humanitarian, and security challenge. Nigeria's presentation highlighted how environmental pressures are impacting the region.
