The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) confirmed two inmate deaths from a cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano. The confirmation came on September 26, shortly after Amnesty International raised an alarm over suspected cholera deaths at the facility, reporting at least six deaths in one week. NCoS Public Relations Officer Chief Superintendent Jane Osuji stated that one victim died at the custodial centre and the other at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital. The NCoS declared the outbreak contained, citing laboratory investigations conducted with Kano State public health authorities.
