Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the West African Bar Association, has filed a suit at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in Abuja against the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The suit, numbered ECW/CCJ/APP/30/2026, alleges violations of his fundamental rights to personal liberty, dignity, fair hearing, property, and freedom of movement between the 1980s and 1990s under various military administrations. Falana's first major confrontation with authorities reportedly occurred during his National Youth Service in Oyo State from 1982 to 1983 when he represented students of the University. He has been involved in human rights and public accountability advocacy since his call to the Nigerian Bar in 1982.
