A Navy official overseeing workforce concerns said that transportation challenges are a key barrier to attracting and retaining workers at US submarine yards. The Submarine Industrial Base Program Office, along with federal and state partners, has found success in addressing region-specific problems, including transportation. One program has provided nearly $200,000 for transportation via gas cards and bus passes. Regional teams have been critical in examining particular workforce needs around submarine construction and repair yards.
