Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic resigned on Sunday in order to run for prime minister in October snap elections. He announced his resignation from the presidential palace in Belgrade, stating he would hand over his duties to the parliament speaker the next morning. The snap election was a key demand of a student-led movement that emerged after the November 2024 collapse of a canopy at Novi Sad railway station, which killed 16 people and was widely blamed on corruption. The tragedy sparked some of Serbia's largest protests since the fall of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, with hundreds of thousands participating at times.
