Thirty-seven Nigerians died after being suffocated, dehydrated and abandoned inside a cell run by an agency of the Nigerian state, with teenagers and internally displaced persons among the dead. According to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps' own admissions, survivors' testimony and the account of Niger State's governor, 66 people were crushed into a single cell built for a fraction of that number. They begged for water and were ignored, and reportedly drank their own urine to survive. A survivor alleges that an unidentified substance was sprayed into the cell.
