Gunmen killed at least 27 people in two mass shootings in Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa, police reported on Sunday. In one incident, eight gunmen armed with assault rifles and pistols attacked a bar in Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg, killing 17 people and wounding 15 others before torching two vehicles and fleeing. The dead included 13 males and four females. The motive for the attacks is unknown, and the area has been a focus of a government crackdown on illegal mining. The violence is the latest in a series of criminal incidents in the country.
