President Yoweri Museveni commissioned the Mbale Wildlife Conservation Education Centre, known as Mbale Zoo, during World Tourism Day 2026 celebrations at Mbale Secondary School Grounds. The event was held under the theme 'Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.' Museveni said tourism is a lucrative service industry, especially for households with limited land for commercial agriculture, and encouraged communities to benefit from its economic multiplier effect. He contrasted the global tourism industry with the coffee market, noting that tourism supports a broad chain of activities including accommodation, transport, food, entertainment, guiding, and cultural enterprises.
