Turkish comedian Deniz Goktas went on trial at an Istanbul court on Monday on charges including insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The 32-year-old was arrested on July 3, a week after posting a YouTube video of his June stand-up performance that drew nearly nine million views. He has been held in pre-trial detention since, facing charges of insulting Erdogan and incitement to public hatred, with prosecutors later adding a charge of praising crime and criminals. Around 50 protesters gathered in the rain outside Istanbul's Caglayan courthouse.
