NATO has been using fighter jets armed with expensive air-to-air missiles to take down cheap drones that breach alliance airspace, a costly dynamic officials say needs to change. Latvia is building a Ukraine-inspired automated anti-drone wall along its entire eastern border with Russia, designed to make fighter jets a last line of defense rather than the first. Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis told Business Insider that the system aims to detect and neutralize any drone that flies into its airspace and is expected to be completed by the end of September. Melnis said jets will be the 'secondary means' of stopping drones.
