The Akwa Ibom State Government has set up a task force to clamp down on illegal mining activities in the state. The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Nsikak Ekong, said many illegal mining sites had been shut down. Speaking in Uyo, Ekong said some illegal miners operate at night and leave without notice, adding that the task force would intensify tracking of such operations. He said the governor set up the task force under the ARISE agenda, and that a lot of the activities had so far been closed down.
