Nigeria seeks more funding for Niger, Lake Chad basins

Nigeria has called for increased public and private investment in the Niger and Lake Chad basins to tackle environmental, economic, and security challenges in the subregion. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Joseph Utsev made the call at the opening of a three-day regional conference on hydrodiplomacy, gender, and strategic investments in Abuja, supported by German Cooperation. Utsev emphasized that the strategic importance of the basins requires greater investment in water infrastructure and other critical sectors. He noted that water resources cross political boundaries and stressed the need for sustainable and equitable management by countries sharing the basins.
