A new government watchdog report from the GAO has found that the US Navy's Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program will cost over $200 billion and take more than 50 years to complete. The program aims to repair poor conditions at the Navy's four public shipyards, which maintain nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers. Unplanned costs and newly identified risks have expanded the project's scope. The report recommends that Congress require annual progress updates from the Navy.
