The Supreme Court of Nigeria, sitting in Abuja, delivered a lead judgement on Friday, December 12, 2025, in the case of Iniobong Matthew Etuk-Udo against the State. The case, with suit number SC/CR/855/2020, was heard by Justices John Inyang Okoro, Adamu Jauro, Jummai Hannatu Sankey, Stephen Jonah Adah and Abubakar Sadiq Umar. The appellant and two others at large were alleged to have killed Monday Matthew and Owoidoho Monday Matthew by pouring petrol on them and setting them ablaze on June 6, 2009, at Ikpe Atai village in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The judgement, delivered by Honourable Jummai Hannatu Sankey, JSC, addressed the issue of conviction based on a retracted confessional statement.
