TACKLING FOOD WASTE AND LOSS

The Organisation for Technology Advancement of Cold Chain in West Africa (OTACCWA) reported that Nigeria lost an estimated 30 to 40 million metric tonnes of food to post-harvest inefficiencies in 2025. The losses occurred across major value chains, including tomatoes, vegetables, fruits, dairy, meat, fish, and root crops. OTACCWA President Alexander Isong stated that this translates to approximately N3.5 trillion to N5 trillion in economic losses. The organisation called for heavy government investment in cold chain equipment and services to address the problem.
