The UK government announced on Tuesday that national museums will remain free for foreign visitors, reversing a previously floated proposal to charge tourists an entry fee. Access to permanent collections at institutions such as the British Museum and National Gallery has been free since 2001. The government had announced in March that it would explore charging foreign visitors to boost funding for the cash-strapped sector. After months of consultation, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport decided against the move, stating that the impacts and benefits of charging would not be felt equally across the sector.
