The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has surpassed 8,000 for the first time since the current outbreak began, according to Congolese authorities. With 8,067 confirmed cases and 3,901 deaths, the case fatality rate is over 48 percent across 63 affected health zones in seven provinces. Dr. Janet Diaz of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme stated that early access to care can significantly improve survival chances, but many people are still dying at home or in their communities because they cannot reach health facilities in time.
