US to allow flights between Iraq holy city and Iran

The United States has granted Iraqi Airways a sanctions waiver to operate flights to Iran, according to Iraq's transport ministry. The exemption, obtained through efforts by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and Transport Minister Wahb al-Hasani, applies to pilgrims traveling between Iran and the Iraqi holy city of Najaf. Flights are expected to begin from Najaf in October once organizational requirements are met. The Iraqi government had been in talks with the US after sanctions on Iran's aviation sector took effect.
