The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has disclosed that about 10 million Nigerian children are currently out of early childhood care, development and education (ECCDE). Only 35.6 per cent of children aged 36 to 59 months attend any form of early childhood education, according to UBEC Executive Secretary Dr Aisha Garba. She also revealed that approximately 70 per cent of Nigerian 10-year-olds cannot read and understand a simple text. The commission warned that states risk losing ECCDE funding if they fail to meet an October 5 deadline.
