The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 34-year-old man, James John, also known as "Kpoi," over alleged illegal mining activities in Ibeno Local Government Area. According to Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John, Kpoi is one of the principal suspects involved in illegal mining at Okorutip, Atia, and Ndito Ekaiba coastal villages. Other suspects fled when police operatives arrived, and bags containing titanium ore, commonly called "black sand," were recovered. The operation was part of the command's enforcement drive against illegal mining announced on September 27, 2026, with operatives storming the sites on September 28, 2026.
