The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 show an expanded African contingent. South Africa's University of Cape Town is Africa's top institution, climbing back into the global top 150 at joint 147th, its best position in seven years. South Africa is the only sub-Saharan African country in the global top 200 and top 500. Nigeria is the best-represented country in the region with 29 institutions, adding five universities since last year. A total of 69 universities from 16 countries in sub-Saharan Africa are ranked, up from 55 universities from 14 countries last year.
