The African Clean Cooking Transition Forum (ACCT) was recently held in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. Leaders and experts from Africa gathered to discuss ways to improve access to clean cooking and address energy poverty on the continent. The forum, organized by the Global Sustainable Energy & Leadership Network and the African Energy Commission, focused on using clean cooking as a way to enhance energy access, create jobs, and reduce poverty. The ACCT initiative aims to make clean cooking a key part of Africa's energy transition, fostering opportunities in business, innovation, and green jobs. Notable participants included government officials, climate advocates, and representatives from various organizations. They discussed practical steps to promote cleaner cooking methods, such as using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), improving environmental reporting, and developing financing options for carbon credits. A significant emphasis was placed on ensuring that women, who play a crucial role in household energy use, benefit from these changes through local businesses and job training. The ideas and commitments made during this meeting will help shape the upcoming full launch of the ACCT Forum, which is set to take place in London in December 2026. The initiative aims to create energy solutions that fit Africa's unique challenges while promoting sustainable development and reducing poverty.
