The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) is planning to hold an online auction for gas distribution licenses by the end of 2026. This follows a nationwide mapping of gas distribution areas that will be completed in October. The head of NMDPRA, Engr. Rabiu Umar, explained that companies will be able to bid for licenses to distribute gas in specific areas, similar to how companies apply for oil licenses. This move aims to improve Nigeria's gas distribution system, making it more open and accessible for various participants. Umar emphasized that having the right infrastructure is crucial for turning gas reserves into productive resources that can benefit the economy. He mentioned the need for better infrastructure to transport gas from production sites to processing plants, power stations, and homes. The NMDPRA is also working on creating clear rules for how gas can be transported through pipelines, ensuring that all qualified companies can access this infrastructure. They have partnered with another government body to prevent unfair practices in the market. Umar highlighted the importance of trust and discipline in the gas market, stating that reliable contracts and transparent pricing are key for attracting investors. He aims for the domestic gas market to be fully mature by September 2028, ahead of the original goal of 2030, focusing on real-world testing rather than just declarations. Overall, the initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Nigeria's gas sector and make it more competitive and efficient.
