In Borno State, Nigeria, there is a disagreement between the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the police over the arrest of five young people involved in a campaign called “Tinubu Must Go.” The police claim these youths were arrested for causing public disturbances and possessing illegal drugs during a routine patrol in Maiduguri. They found items like T-shirts with the campaign message, suspected drugs, and other items on the suspects. The ADC, however, argues that the police are lying about the reasons for the arrests. They say that four of the arrested individuals are members of their party and that they had permission to hold a peaceful gathering to support the campaign. The ADC claims that the trouble started when police detained one of their members who went to retrieve confiscated T-shirts, and when others went to help him, they were also arrested. The police insist that the arrests were not about the political message on the T-shirts but rather about the alleged possession of drugs and weapons. They maintain that they are a professional force that does not discriminate based on political views. The situation has led to conflicting stories from both sides, and the legal process will now determine the truth behind the arrests.
