The Nigerian Heart Foundation (NHF) disclosed that over 235,000 Nigerians die from cardiovascular diseases annually, warning that many heart conditions develop silently from childhood into adulthood. At a press conference in Lagos to mark the 2026 World Heart Day, the Foundation stressed that heart-health education must begin in schools and extend to families to curb the rising burden of cardiovascular diseases. The day was themed 'Healthy Hearts: From the Classroom to the Families' by the NHF, while the global campaign of the World Heart Federation focused on 'Don't Miss a Beat.' The Foundation added that globally, cardiovascular diseases account for 19.8 million of an estimated 63 million deaths annually, and at least 80 per cent of premature deaths from heart disease could be prevented by controlling five major risk factors.
