The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has approved $100 million for the Kano-Maradi Railway Project in Nigeria. This funding will help buy trains and other equipment needed for the second phase of the project. The decision was made during a meeting on September 28, 2026, where the bank approved a total of $390 million for various projects. The Kano-Maradi railway is important because it will improve travel and trade between northern Nigeria and other West African countries. Better transportation is key to making it easier and cheaper to move goods in the region. This investment is part of EBID's new plan for 2026-2030, which focuses on funding infrastructure and productive projects. In addition to Nigeria, EBID also approved significant funding for projects in Ghana, including $50 million for fuel supply and $230 million for gold mining. Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, the bank's president, emphasized that these investments aim to boost economic development, create jobs, and support sustainable growth in West Africa. The projects align with global goals to reduce poverty, ensure food security, promote decent work, and address climate change.
