The article discusses a recent summit where Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigeria's Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, announced that the number of active oil drilling rigs in Nigeria has increased significantly from 14 to over 60 under President Bola Tinubu's leadership. This boost has led to a production rate of more than 1.7 million barrels of oil per day. Lokpobiri attributes this growth to reforms in the petroleum industry that are improving investor confidence and encouraging private sector investments. He noted that Nigeria has also attracted over $10 billion in foreign investments, with local companies now producing more than half of the country's crude oil. The summit focused on the need for better infrastructure, transportation, and refining capacity to support this growth. While there are positive developments, Lokpobiri mentioned challenges like infrastructure deficits, high costs, and regulatory issues that could hinder further investment. Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), emphasized that the government cannot develop the gas sector alone and highlighted the importance of private investment and expertise. He pointed out that Nigeria aims to become a gas-powered economy, which will require significant investment in infrastructure. The Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Prof. Shehu Aliyu, mentioned that the PTDF has sponsored over 15,000 scholars and is committed to turning research findings into practical applications in the industry. Keynote speaker Oladapo Filani stressed the importance of not just producing skilled workers but also retaining their expertise and turning it into economic value. He called for stronger partnerships between PTDF and the private sector to address the challenges facing Nigeria's petroleum industry.
