Obinna Chima, the Saturday Editor of THISDAY, recently spoke at a seminar organized by the Central Bank of Nigeria, urging journalists to improve how they cover financial news in Nigeria. He believes that instead of just reporting numbers and statements from banks, journalists should provide deeper insights into what these figures mean and how they reflect the changing financial system. Chima pointed out that recent changes in banking, taxes, and technology (like fintech) have transformed Nigeria's financial landscape significantly over the past decade. He emphasized that journalists need to interpret these changes and explain what drives financial performance, rather than simply repeating what institutions say. He described the ideal future financial journalist as someone who not only reports but also investigates, educates, and holds institutions accountable. With the rise of digital banking and mobile payments, he noted that it's important for journalists to help the public understand complex financial topics. Chima also highlighted the importance of trust in financial reporting. He stated that accurate and credible information is crucial for maintaining public confidence in the financial system. He warned journalists not to prioritize speed over accuracy, as credibility is vital. Lastly, he mentioned that financial literacy is a key responsibility of the media, helping the public understand financial reforms and policies. He concluded that the future of Nigeria's financial system relies not just on technology, but also on a trustworthy media that can explain these changes to citizens.
