A court in Port Harcourt has postponed a case about whether Kingsley Chinda can run for governor of Rivers State as a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC). The next court date is set for November 4, 2026. The case was brought by Samuel Amatonjie, who is arguing that Chinda's switch from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC was not valid according to the law. Chinda, who is currently a leader in the House of Representatives with the PDP, became the APC candidate after other hopefuls dropped out of the party's primary election. Amatonjie wants the court to decide if Chinda's defection to the APC was legal under the Nigerian Constitution. He argues that if the court finds Chinda's defection invalid, then the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not recognize him as a candidate for the upcoming election. The case raises important questions about the rules governing political party membership and candidate eligibility in Nigeria.
