The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is working hard to find and fix problems in banks early to prevent financial crises. The NDIC's leader, Mr. Thompson Oludare Sunday, spoke about this at a trade fair in Abuja. He emphasized that the NDIC is not just there to pay claims after banks fail but to help reduce risks in the banking system. The NDIC checks banks closely to see how well they are doing, especially looking at their loans and assets. They have introduced new systems and tools to improve their monitoring and work closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria to keep the banking system stable. Recently, the NDIC increased the amount of money that is insured for depositors: up to 5 million Naira for regular banks and 2 million Naira for smaller banks. This change helps protect most depositors, especially families and small businesses, from losing their money if a bank fails. Mr. Sunday also warned people to be careful about where they put their money. He advised against using unlicensed fund managers or schemes that promise high returns, as these can be risky and lead to financial loss. He highlighted the importance of being informed and checking the legitimacy of investment opportunities. To make things easier for depositors, the NDIC has improved its online services, allowing people to quickly access information about their insurance coverage and how to claim their money if needed. They also encourage everyone to ensure their bank account details are accurate to speed up any reimbursements.
