A group called the Coalition of Civil Society in Nigeria has asked the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to look into possible problems with Nigeria's 2026 federal budget. They are particularly concerned about questionable spending related to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, who leads the Senate Committee on Appropriations. The coalition claims there are irregularities in the budget, including money allocated to a group called the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), which they say may not even exist legally. They are puzzled about how this group got budget money when the government has disputed its existence. The ICPC has already investigated this issue and found that the PFIPC was not legally created, leading them to recommend legal action against its promoter. Additionally, the coalition is worried about about N8.4 billion allocated for road projects under an education commission that typically doesn't handle such projects. They want the ICPC to find out who proposed these projects, why they were included in the budget, and whether any officials gained improperly from this situation. The petition also mentions that some projects may have been moved to Ogun State and misrepresented as local initiatives. The coalition is asking the ICPC to check all related documents and project details to ensure everything is above board. They are calling for Senator Adeola to step down from his position while the investigation is ongoing, or at least be removed from overseeing the disputed allocations. The coalition wants a thorough investigation to ensure that public funds are not being misused for personal or political gain.
