In a speech on Nigeria's Independence Day, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, the governorship candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State, called for a "reset" of the state. He highlighted serious issues like poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and poor infrastructure, which he believes stem from failed leadership. Iyovwaye emphasized that true independence means being able to meet basic needs, such as having a job, access to healthcare, and proper education. He criticized the state for not utilizing its wealth from oil and gas effectively, as many residents still live in poverty and face inadequate services like poor schools and hospitals. He proposed a plan to shift Delta State's economy away from relying on federal funds, encouraging industrialization, agriculture, and investment. He believes the state should utilize its ports and natural resources to become self-sufficient. If elected, Iyovwaye promised to ensure transparency in government spending and reform public services. He urged the people of Delta State to come together, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds, to demand better governance and reject tribal politics. He concluded by encouraging residents to make the 2027 election a chance to break free from ineffective leadership and improve their lives.
