In his Independence Anniversary speech, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu talked about Nigeria's tough economic situation and the need for important changes. He explained that for many years, leaders avoided making hard decisions, which led to serious economic problems. By 2023, poverty was increasing, and hope seemed lost, prompting the government to take action. Tinubu compared Nigeria to a cancer patient who must choose between painful treatment or just masking the pain without fixing the problem. He criticized past leaders for choosing easy fixes instead of addressing the root issues. His administration, however, decided to tackle these problems head-on, even though the required reforms would be challenging and uncomfortable. He urged Nigerians to stick with the reforms and not go back to relying on what he called "addictive subsidies," which only temporarily relieve the issues without solving them. Tinubu emphasized the importance of remembering why these changes were necessary and the progress made since starting the reforms.
