In his Independence Day speech on October 1, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acknowledged that his government cannot solve Nigeria's long-standing economic and social issues in just four years. He emphasized that these problems have built up over many generations due to past government failures to make tough decisions. Tinubu compared the Nigerian economy to a patient with cancer, stating that previous administrations only treated symptoms instead of the root causes. He pointed out that when he took office, poverty was rising and hope was dwindling, leading his administration to implement necessary reforms despite initial hardships. He reported improvements in the economy, such as over 4% growth, reduced oil theft, lower inflation, and increased non-oil exports. Tinubu announced a shift from focusing solely on reforms to aiming for widespread prosperity, with plans to lower living costs and create more job opportunities. The President highlighted initiatives to support farmers, improve infrastructure, and enhance education and healthcare services. He also mentioned programs like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and Consumer Credit Corporation to help low-income families and working Nigerians. While he recognized that many still struggle with basic needs, he insisted that the government’s goal is not just to manage poverty but to eliminate it. Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united and optimistic about the future, expressing hope for a prosperous Nigeria where everyone has opportunities to succeed. He concluded by wishing everyone a happy Independence Day and encouraging them to look forward with faith in the country’s progress.
