In a speech for Nigeria's Independence Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu discussed the country's challenging situation in 2023, describing it as "darker than ever" due to increasing poverty and a lack of hope. He explained that previous governments had avoided making tough economic decisions, which worsened the problems over time. Tinubu compared Nigeria's economic issues to a serious illness, saying that while the treatment might be painful, it is necessary to fix the root causes. He criticized past leaders for only addressing the symptoms of the crisis instead of tackling the deeper issues. His administration has started making tough reforms to improve the economy, despite facing hardships as a result. He highlighted some positive changes since these reforms, such as economic growth, reduced oil theft, and the highest non-oil export revenue in Nigeria's history. Tinubu emphasized that the government is now focused on making life better for all Nigerians, aiming to lower living costs and create jobs. To support the most vulnerable citizens, the government is strengthening assistance programs and improving education and healthcare services. Tinubu acknowledged that while many people are still struggling, the government is committed to long-term solutions and wants to help Nigerians achieve prosperity. He encouraged unity and optimism about the future, stating that Nigeria is on a better path and has the potential for a prosperous future where opportunities are available for everyone.
