The University of Ibadan (UI) recently held a training session for student union leaders, focusing on the importance of ethical leadership and accountability. Professor Adebayo Oluwole, the director of the Career Development and Counselling Centre, emphasized that being a leader is about more than just having a title; it's about having good character, skills, and the ability to influence others positively. The training included various topics such as responsible governance, teamwork, conflict management, and the prevention of drug abuse. Experts led sessions on recognizing early signs of drug abuse, understanding different personality types for better conflict resolution, and developing people skills like empathy and altruism. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kayode Adebowale encouraged student leaders to lead with integrity, empathy, and courage. He stressed that effective leadership involves understanding and communicating with others and creating trust and healthy relationships. He also reminded them that their legacy as leaders is not just about their accomplishments but also about the positive impact they have on their peers and the university community. Overall, the training aimed to equip student leaders with the necessary skills and values to lead responsibly, both during their time at the university and beyond.
