The Nigerian Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has instructed a group led by Professor Peter Okebukola to start ranking universities, polytechnics, and colleges in Nigeria for 2026. This decision comes as 29 Nigerian universities have made it into the 2027 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which is an increase from 24 the previous year. This ranking is significant because it shows that Nigeria has the most universities represented in Sub-Saharan Africa, with five institutions entering the global rankings for the first time. The ranking will use 22 criteria to encourage competition among schools and help them improve their global standing. The Nigerian Ministry of Education believes that these rankings reflect ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing research quality, teaching, and international collaboration within the education sector. Federal universities are performing particularly well, with many making notable progress in the rankings. Overall, this initiative is seen as a way to improve the quality of education in Nigeria and help institutions identify areas for growth and improvement.
