Indigenes and community leaders from Orogho Dukedom in Edo State are expressing serious concerns about how oil companies and a local traditional ruler are managing funds meant for community development. They claim that the oil companies, along with the Enogie (the traditional ruler), are misusing resources that should benefit the seven communities in their area. The community representatives, led by Osahon Imaru, allege that since the current Enogie took over, there have been many issues, including the unfair distribution of funds and the introduction of local representatives who are allegedly exploiting their positions. They are particularly worried about a misappropriation of 38.5 million naira intended for landowners and community projects. Additionally, they raised concerns about land being sold without community consent, which was later recovered thanks to intervention from local residents. The group has documented evidence to support their claims and has sought help from higher authorities, including the Oba of Benin, to address these issues. They emphasize that their goal is not to oppose traditional leadership but to ensure accountability and proper governance. They want to ensure that all seven communities have a say in decisions that affect them, promoting peace, justice, and development in the area.
