Internal document reveals Amazon's secret contingency plan for life without the US Postal Service

Amazon has created a plan called Project Aurelian in response to tough negotiations with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). This plan prepares Amazon for a future where it might not rely on USPS for deliveries, which is important since USPS has been one of its main partners. The goal of Project Aurelian is to ensure that Amazon can deliver packages to nearly all U.S. ZIP codes—about 95%—by 2029. To achieve this, Amazon plans to build more delivery stations, partner with local businesses for deliveries, and lower the number of packages needed to offer delivery in certain areas. This expansion will help Amazon cover 39,400 ZIP codes, which means they will be able to serve 99.9% of their customers. Despite these plans, Amazon still needs USPS. Their current contract with USPS runs until September 2029, and Amazon believes that they will continue to work together because both companies depend on each other. However, Amazon is investing significantly in its own delivery network to reduce reliance on any single carrier, including USPS. Overall, Project Aurelian is a strategic move by Amazon to enhance its delivery capabilities and ensure it can continue to serve customers effectively, even if changes occur with USPS or other delivery partners.
