A group of leading AI researchers is warning that we might soon see a rapid increase in AI capabilities, which they call an "intelligence explosion." This could happen if AI systems become able to create new versions of themselves, leading to very fast advancements in technology. Alan Chan, one of the researchers, explained that instead of having major developments in AI once a year, we could see them happening every month. He and his colleagues wrote a paper urging policymakers to understand how companies are working to automate AI development. They believe it's important for governments to keep track of these changes and suggest using independent auditors to ensure safety and transparency. Recently, major AI companies like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI agreed to partner with independent auditors to help monitor their progress. However, the details of this agreement are not very specific. While automating AI research could lead to great benefits, such as faster medical advancements, it also carries risks, including the potential for losing control over AI systems. Chan emphasized that while we could see amazing new technologies more quickly, we also need to be prepared to handle new challenges that arise from these advancements.
