In a recent speech for Nigeria's Independence Day, Abia State Governor Alex Otti urged Nigerians to stop selling their votes and to be more active in politics and governance. He emphasized that the country's future relies on citizens making informed choices when voting and participating in discussions about governance. Otti pointed out that while Nigeria has many resources, real progress won't happen unless both citizens and leaders work hard. He encouraged people to engage in their civic duties, such as voting, paying taxes, and fighting against corruption. He acknowledged that Nigeria faces serious issues like poor infrastructure, poverty, and insecurity, which have led many young people to leave the country for better opportunities. However, he stressed that instead of feeling hopeless, citizens should work together to demand better governance. The governor also highlighted the importance of democracy, which Nigeria has maintained for 27 years, and urged people to choose capable leaders. He praised various groups contributing to the nation’s development and encouraged everyone to stay committed to improving Nigeria. Otti ended his speech by thanking the people of Abia for their support and reaffirming his commitment to their welfare and security. He warned that complacency could threaten the freedoms Nigerians have fought for and urged vigilance to protect those gains.
