GE Vernova and PROTEC recently celebrated the graduation of 27 students from the Next Engineers Engineering Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa. This program helps young people prepare for careers in engineering by providing hands-on experiences and mentorship. The graduation ceremony took place at The University of the Witwatersrand and marked the third group of graduates from the program. The students, coming from nine different high schools, are encouraged to pursue engineering studies at universities and technical schools. Since its launch in 2022, the program has aimed to close the skills gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in South Africa. It offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes design challenges and career coaching, totaling over 180 hours of learning. The graduates have also received scholarships to support their further education. GE Vernova employees have actively participated in the program, contributing over 3,700 hours of mentoring. The program not only focuses on engineering skills but also aims to build confidence and open new opportunities for young people. In addition to the Next Engineers program, GE Vernova has provided significant financial support through bursaries for students pursuing various degrees, helping to ease the cost of education. Overall, the Next Engineers Engineering Academy is part of a broader effort to inspire and prepare the next generation to tackle important challenges in their communities and the world.
