The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a strong warning about the way the 2026 agreement with the Federal Government is being implemented. They are concerned that some universities are not following the agreement properly, which could lead to delays and unfair treatment of staff. During a meeting at the University of Uyo, SSANU’s president, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, emphasized that the agreement must be fully implemented and must benefit all members. He noted that while some universities have started implementing the agreement, others are lagging due to funding and administrative issues. Ibrahim stated that the government needs to release the necessary funds for all universities to ensure that staff receive their entitled payments and benefits. He highlighted that issues like salaries, promotions, and working conditions remain important and must be addressed. He also mentioned that the situation varies across state universities, with some states making more progress than others. He warned that delayed or selective implementation could create tensions and disrupt harmony in the universities. Furthermore, Ibrahim assured that SSANU is committed to protecting its members from any unfair treatment related to their union activities. He urged members to report any violations of their rights. Lastly, he expressed concerns about the accreditation process for universities, stating that it should involve physical inspections rather than relying solely on virtual reviews, which could compromise the quality of education. In summary, SSANU is insisting on fair and complete implementation of the 2026 agreement and is prepared to take action if necessary to protect its members' rights and interests.
