The Western Cape Government has invested over R30 million to create a new sports facility at Lentegeur Senior Secondary School and Cornflower Primary School in Mitchells Plain. This facility will benefit students from 68 schools in the area, providing them with two rugby fields, a cricket oval with three pitches, practice cricket nets, a clubhouse, and an artificial surface for various sports like rugby, football, and hockey. The investment is part of a larger plan, the Western Cape School Sport Strategy, which will allocate R130 million over three years to provide sports equipment to 624 schools that charge no or low fees. During the opening ceremony, various government officials emphasized the importance of this facility for the community and the opportunities it offers to young people. They encouraged students to take care of the facility and use it actively, highlighting that it should benefit not just the schools but the entire community. The facility aims to include all students, including girls and those with disabilities, ensuring everyone can participate in sports. The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and students engaging in sports activities, marking the beginning of a new chapter for sports in the area.
